Scope and Contents

This collection includes photographs from two Ben Hur films and one stage production ranging from 1902 to 1959, including William S. Hart as Messala in the 1902 theatrical production; Ramon Novarro as Ben-Hur and Francis X. Bushman as Messala in the 1925/1926 in the film; and Charlton Hesston as Ben-Hur in the 1959 film. The images were used in the November 30, 1958 issue of the Indianapolis Star.

Historical Note

Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ is a popular novel written by Hoosier author Lew Wallace and published in 1880. The story has since been adapted to a play which debuted on Broadway in 1899, 5 motion pictures, and a television miniseries. The first full-length silent film debuted in 1925 and starred Ramon Novarro as the protagonist, Judah Ben-Hur. The beloved 1959 sound film starring Charlton Heston as Ben-Hur won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
