Scope and Contents

This collection includes photographs and ephemera of John S. Benham in Ripley County, Indiana ranging from 1906 to 1922 and undated regarding his teaching and political career, which include several group photographs of teachers and students, a group of workers with timber on two wagons, and a group of U.S. congressmen in Canada. There are also two cards promoting Benham for Congress.

Biographical Note

John Samuel Benham was an educator and U.S. congressman in the early 20th century. He was born on a farm near Benham, Ripley County, Indiana on October 24, 1863 to John and Mary Jane (Benefiel) Benham. He worked as a teacher in several places in Indiana from 1882 to 1907 and worked as superintendant of schools in Ripley County. In 1907, he returned to Benham and entered into the timber, milling, contracting, and agricultural business. In 1916, Benham was a delegate to the Republican National Convention and later he was elected as a Republican candidate to the U.S. House of Representatives from 1919 to 1923. He was unsuccessful in seeking reelection in 1922. In 1923, Benham moved to Batesville, Indiana and engaged as a building contractor. He also resumed the position of superintendent of schools in Ripley County from 1924 to 1929. Benham retired in 1931 and continued residing in Batesville until his death on December 11, 1935.
