Historical Note

The downtown Indianapolis canal, which is part of the Indiana Central Canal, was cleaned during November, 2007-March, 2008, the first cleaning in nearly 20 years. The project cost the city $423,000 under the direction of the primary contractor, Merrell Brothers of Kokomo. Crews used vacuums to remove 267 semitrailer loads of sludge and waste from the canal. The canal was drained and small plows were used to scrape algae, construction runoff, and sediment allong the entire length of the concrete-lined waterway.
