Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a photograph album with 37 black-and-white photographs pertaining to Indianapolis Railways, Inc. Included are photographs of company buildings and work areas, street cars and trackless trolleys, and several street intersections. Also included and photos of monotobe poles and trolley wires. The album appears to be a compilation of several photographers' photos.

Administrative Notes

Indianapolis Railways, Inc. began operation on June 1, 1932. Indianapolis Railways, Inc. took ownership of all of the property and operations that had been held and operated by Indianapolis Street Railway Company and Broad Ripple Traction Company. Indianapolis Railways, Inc. also acquired the stock of the Peoples Motor Coach Company and the Traction Terminal Corporation. The last full day of street car operation in Indianapolis occurred January 9, 1953 after 89 years of street car operation. On April 22, 1954 Indianapolis Railways, Inc. changed its name to Indianapolis Transit System, Inc. because rail lines were no longer operated by the company. At this time the Traction Terminal Corporation became Terminal Properties, Inc. Trackless trolley operation discontinued March 9, 1957. Bus service continued under the name IndyGo Public Transportation.
