Historical Note
The motion picture film, Blue Chips tells the story of Pete Bell (played by Nick Nolte), head coach of the Western University Dolphins of Los Angeles. Once coach of a great program, Bell and the Dolphins have fallen on hard times due to other colleges paying for “blue chip” prospects, or extremely highly rated high-school athletes, a practice which at the time was illegal. One of Western’s boosters pays for three high-caliber players to come play for Western University: Neon Boudeaux (played by Shaquille O’Neal), Butch McRae (played by Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway), and Ricky Roe (played by Matt Nover). The team’s new success is immediate, but more demands start piling in from the paid players and secrets start leaking out about the other team members as well. More shenanigans and hijinks ensue, until Western University must face Indiana University Hoosiers, the number one college team in the country and head coach Bob Knight on a nationally syndicated broadcast. The Dolphins win, but the pressure of the turmoil and chaos gets to Coach Bell and he admits everything in the post-game press conference and resigns his position.
The 1994 U.S. movie was filmed in Frankfort, Indiana for the arena interior scenes, and French Lick, Indiana, as well as in Chicago and New Orleans, in addition to Los Angeles on the campus of the University of Southern California. The leading actor, Nick Nolte, shadowed the volatile IU coach, Bob Knight, in 1992 while researching the role. Many coaches, players, and sportscasters, including Knight, appeared in cameos as themselves in the film.
