Historical Note
The USS Bennington was an aircraft carrier commissioned on August 6, 1944 for service during World War II. It was reconstructed and reclassified as a class CVA-20 before being recommissioned in November 1952. On May 26, 1954, while cruising off the coast of Narragansett Bay, the carrier suffered a catapult explosion and fire that killed 103 crewmen and injured 201 men.
