Historical Note
The Potawatomi are a Native American tribe that were forcibly removed from their homelands in Northern Indiana/Great Lakes Region in 1838 by the United States military. During the forced march of 660 miles that lasted 61 days, 41 of the 859 Potawatomi died and were buried in unmarked graves. The forced removal came to be known as the Potawatomi Trail of Death. In the early 20th century, the Indiana state legislature introduced a bill to erect a memorial to the Potawatomi. Sculptor John Novelli created a statue of Chief Menominee for $1,875 and the statue was erected and dedicated in 1909.
The city of Plymouth is located in Marshall County in northern Indiana. Plymouth became the county seat of Marshall County in 1836 and was incorporated as a city in 1873. The majority of historic buildings that are still there today were built in the downtown area between 1870 and 1940.
