Historical Note

The 19th Amendment was the result of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States. It prohibits any United States citizen from being denied the right to vote on the basis of sex. The amendment was first drafted in the late 1870s by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton; submitted to Congress in 1919; ratified on August 18, 1920.
