English's Opera House opened on September 27, 1880 with a performance of Hamlet. Built by Indianapolis businessman and politician William H. English, it was located on the northwest quadrant of Monument Circle. Modeled after the New York Grand Opera House, the theater could seat more than 2,000 guests and had the largest stage in the city. English's presented a variety of entertainment, including plays, musicals, concerts, ballets, and films. Later known as the English Theatre, it closed and the building was demolished in 1948.
