Historical Note
Governor Edward L. Jackson of Indiana appointed members of an executive committee to "work towards the creation of a state memorial park including the site of the Lincoln family cabin and the grave of Nancy Hanks Lincoln." The Indiana Lincoln Union was formed in 1927, raising funds and support for a memorial to dedicated to President Abraham Lincoln's youth spent in the state. The Indiana Lincoln Union was active until the 1940s.
In 1932, Lincoln State Park was established to protect the Lincoln family cabin, Pioneer Cemetery, which included the grave of Lincoln's mother, and the surrounding area. The Lincoln sites became part of a memorial district, now known as the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. A memorial building was constructed on the site under the purview of the Union. Completed in 1945, the building includes five sculpted panels depicting Lincoln's life, a small theatre, a museum, a private gallery, a chapel, and a meeting hall. Richard Lieber, the father of Indiana's state parks, was a member of the Union.
