Historical Note
Music was important during the Civil War as both a source of entertainment and as a
way to give voice to feelings that were difficult to express in other ways. Music was also
used during battle to rally troops as they fought. Additionally, songs sometimes
recounted the events that took place on the battlefield for both sides fighting in the Civil
War.
