Scope and Contents
This collection contains the Civil War diary (photocopy) of George M. Collins.
It begins on January 13, 1865 and continues until July 15, 1865. There are a few
sporadic entries and notes after that date. In his diary, Collins discusses life in the
camps, hunger, sickness, disease, his desire to return home, and the capture of
Jefferson Davis. He also commented on the people, particularly slaves, that he meets
during his service. The diary also includes his monthly expenditures for June and May,
as well as a few medicinal recipes, such as cod liver emulsion.

Biographical Note
George Malin Collins was born in Vevay, Indiana on January 10, 1838. He served as
the assistant surgeon for the 17th Indiana Volunteer Infantry from December 12, 1864-
August [8], 1865. Collins married Sarah C. Hardy on January 9, 1861 in Decatur
County, Indiana. Together they had 6 children. George Collins died on August 27, 1896
in Tipton, Indiana and was buried at Fairview Cemetery, Tipton.
