Biographical Note
Marie M. Barenbrugge Ervin was born on August 15, 1921 in Dunkirk, Indiana to Clem
and Rene (Lannoy) Barenbrugge. She had a brother, Clem F. and three sisters, Cecilia
A., Generose J. and Loretta M. Marie worked as head of payroll at Armstrong Cork in
Dunkirk for twelve years. She married William Edmundson Ervin in Dunkirk on June
24, 1953, after which she moved to Harford City, Indiana. They had three daughters,
Annette, Elaine and Diane. William was a prosecuting attorney in Blackford County, city
attorney for Hartford City (1987-1990) and a trustee of the Indiana Historical Society.
He died June 21, 1999. Marie was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic
Church, member and former president of St. John’s Home & School Association and
past president of the Blackford County Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a member of
the Friends of the library. Every year she donated dictionaries to all the third graders in
Blackford County Schools.
She gave the speech "The Ku Klux Klan in Indiana" in 1974 to a women's club in Hartford City, Indiana. Mrs. Ervin was a member of the Blackford County Historical Society. She died July 5, 2012 at the family cottage in Cheboygan County, Michigan. She is buried in the Hartford City Cemetery in Hartford City, Indiana.
