Scope and Contents
This collection includes printed black-and-white scans of two photographs and 56 letters from William Davis Everitt in the United States to his wife, Matilda E. Everitt, and children in Indiana, ranging from 1862 to 1865, while he was serving with the 81st Indiana Infantry Regiment during the U.S. Civil War. The photographs are a portrait of Everitt in uniform and a group portrait of Everitt, his wife, and four of their children in front of their Scott County home in the late 1800s. There is also a typed introduction and index included with reproductions compiled by Jeff Harmon.

Biographical Note
William Davis Everitt was born on February 8, 1833 in Scott County, Indiana to William Conway and Mary Conway (Lewellen) Everitt. He was part of the United Brethren Church growing up before becoming a member of the M. E. Church at Vienna, Indiana, where he attended until his death. Everitt married Matilda Ellen Easum on April 14, 1852 and they had nine children: Milred Angeline, Thomas Henry, Martha Frances, James Edgar, William Rosecrans, Charles Havington, Oliver Eugene, Jesse Fletcher, and Bertha Ellen. During the U.S. Civil War, Everitt mustered into Company I, 81st Indiana Infantry Regiment as a captain. On January 1, 1865, he was commissioned as a major of the 81st Regiment before mustering out at the end of the war. He returned home to Scott County to farm. Everitt died on April 11, 1912, and is buried in Everitt Cemetery in Vienna, Indiana.
