This collection includes a photocopy of a carbon copy, or transcript, of a typed letter from Robert S. Allen in Tokosuka, Kyushu, Japan on November 20, 1945/11/20 regarding damage from bombardments and atomic bomb and how the Japanese people lived and behaved towards Americans at the conclusion of World War II.

Biographical Note

Robert Stanley Allen was born to Warren G. and Maude Allen on February 5, 1919. He was one of four children. He worked at Allison's in Indianapolis, Indiana, then served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant (junior grade) during World War II, visiting Japan in 1945. He married Alice Rose Louise Poske on February 15, 1942 and they had two daughters, Janet and Barbara Elizabeth. The Allens lived in New Haven, Tennessee; Toledo, Ohio; Indianapolis, Indiana, before retiring to Carmel, Indiana. They later moved to Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Michigan. Allen died on March 4, 2006, while Alice died just over a month later on April 5. The couple was buried in Bethlehem Cemetery, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
