James Smith Black was born in Putney, Vermont on July 7, 1819 to James (1789-1866) and Mary (Smith) Black (1791-1871). He married Hannah Maria King (1820-1900) on December 3, 1840 in Paterson, New Jersey and had two sons, Charles Holman and Wallace Winfield (1862-1937). Black was a noted vocal music teacher. He was the director of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, New York during the 1860s and he studied voice with Signor De Begnis. The Blacks moved to Indianapolis in 1867 and lived there for a time. In 1880, the family lived in Kansas City, Missouri, but James and Hannah Black eventually moved back to Indianapolis where they lived until their deaths. Hannah M. Black died on September 5, 1900 in Indianapolis and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery. James S. Black died on July 24, 1910 in Indianapolis and was interred near his wife. Charles Holman Black was a famous salon singer in Paris, France, while Wallace Winfield Black worked in railroads and lived in Chicago, Illinois, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kansas City, Missouri.
