Biographical Note
James Black was a noted music teacher in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born in
Putney, Vermont on July 7, 1819. He was the director of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church
in Brooklyn, New York for a time, and he studied voice with Signor De Begnis. He first
came to Indianapolis in 1867, staying only a year, but returned in 1876 and remained
until his death on July 24, 1910. His son, Charles Holman Black, was a famous salon singer in Paris,
France.
