Scope and Contents

This collection includes one photocopied diary with transcriptions from William D. Slusser in 1863 while he was serving in the 20th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the U.S. Civil War. The journal contains short daily entries noting the weather, military movements, and daily activities in the regiment. The transcription was created by Laure E. and Gobert G Hayworth in 1984 and includes additional information about the 20th Regiment, William D. Slusser, and the Civil War. The original diary is located at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park in Virginia.

Biographical Note

William D. Slusser was born on October 11, 1834 in Troy, Ohio to Henry and Polly (Jackson) Slusser. The family moved to Fountain County, Indiana by the start of the U.S. Civil War. Slusser chose to enlist as a private with Company D,e 20th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment and participated in the Battle of the Ironclads and battles of Second Bull Run, Chantilly, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and the Siege of Petersburg. After the war, Slusser returned home to farm, bouncing back and forth from Illinois to Indiana. Slusser married Mary Catherine Meek on January 18, 1877 in Fountain, Indiana and the couple had three children: Almeda S., Charles T. and Alena. Slusser married a second time in 1913, this time to Mary Minerva Dalton. Slusser died on March 4, 1916 in Fountain, Indiana and is buried in the Old Baptist Cemetery there.
