This collection includes a photocopy of a typed biography of former Tipton County, Indiana sheriff Burl Lilly written by his daughter Mary Jane Flaningam in April 2000. It includes a photograph of the Tipton County jail and the Governor’s Commission of Election for Lilly as sheriff by Indiana governors M. Clifford Townsend and Henry F. Schricker.

Biographical Note

Worthy Burl Lilly was born on July 9, 1887 in Hamilton, Indiana to Joseph Asberry and Nancy Celestine (Porter) Lilly. Burl Lilly was hog farmer for most of his early life, raising Spotted Poland China hogs and judging livestock at Indiana state and county fairs until 1937 when he became a Tipton County deputy sheriff. In 1941, Lilly was elected sheriff of Tipton County serving from 1941 to 1945. Lilly married Odna Mae Cox on September 8, 1914 in Kentucky, and the couple had one child, Mary Jane. Lilly twice served as the Tipton sub-district state highway superintendent and 23 years as the Cicero Township Republican chairman. He was a member of the National Spotted Poland China Association, the Indiana Sheriffs’ Association, and the Elks Lodge in Tipton, Indiana. Lilly died on October 7, 1974 in Tipton, Indiana and is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Tipton.
