Scope and Contents

This collection includes a ledger book, correspondence, and papers from Dr. Thomas Henry Harrison in Indiana and the United States, ranging from April 1856 to May 1863. The ledger includes his work in Hillgrove and Gettysburg, Ohio (1856-1859) and Pine Village, Indiana (1859-1863). The ledger lists medicine, supplies, and services rendered to residents of the two counties. Two of the loose papers relate to settling the estate of Harrison.

Biographical Note

Thomas Henry Harrison was born on December 10, 1842 in Montgomery County, Indiana to James Harvey and Elizabeth (Watkins) Harrison. He became a physician and practiced in Ohio and Indiana before joining the U.S. Union Army during the Civil War. He initially mustered into the 102nd Indiana Infantry Regiment, serving in July 1863 to repel Morgan’s Raid. In 1865, he joined Company C, 150th Indiana Infantry Regiment as a first lieutenant before being promoted to assistant surgeon. After the war, Harrison would return home to continue to practice as a physician. On July 2, 1866, he married Araminta “Minta” B. Higgins in Boone County, Indiana, and the couple had one child, John Higgins. Thomas Harrison, besides being a physician, bought first the Lebanon Pioneer, which he published for several years, before moving onto purchasing the Michigan City Dispatch and moving to the area to run it. Harrison died on August 12, 1890 in Michigan City, Indiana and is buried in Bethel Hill Cemetery in Lebanon, Indiana.
