Administrative History
In 1882, May Wright Sewall founded the Classical School for Girls on the southeast corner of Pennsylvania and St. Joseph streets in Indianapolis, Indiana, as a counterpart to the Classical School for Boys, which was established by her husband, Theodore Lovett Sewall. The school had 44 students when it first opened for the 1881-1882 school year. It expanded in the 1880s to two different buildings, one of which would serve as a school residence for students who lived outside the city. The courses were intended as college preparation and were based on Harvard University’s entrance requirements for women. Some of the first home economics classes in the state would be available at the school. By 1900 the school was experiencing financial difficulties as other rival schools opened and public schools became more common. In 1905, Anna Francis Weaver, a former student of the school and then graduate with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Classical Philology from Stanford University, was brought on to help run the school. Sewall herself retired in 1907, and Weaver kept the school running until 1910, when the organization closed for good.
