Administrative History

The Wayne County Medical Society was organized on July 7, 1864 at Richmond, Indiana. The object of the society was to "increase the knowledge" of the local physicians and to "harmonize and utilize the intercourse of the medical profession" in the county. The society held quarterly meetings and was active for 10 years before being disbanded in April, 1875. Within a few weeks a new organization called the Western Society of Wayne County was organized at Cambridge City. Changes to the requirements of the Indiana State Medical Society prompted the new society to reorganize and again become the Wayne County Medical Society in July, 1875. In 1923 it merged with the Union county Medical Society to form the Wayne-Union Medical Society.
