Scope and Contents

This collection includes invitations, calling cards, at-home cards, and one dance card, many with the name John W. Blackledge, documenting aspects of social life and events in and around Indianapolis, Indiana, ranging from 1881 to 1923. Others materials are diverse, comprising tickets to graduations, wedding announcements, and invitations to teas, dances, dinner parties, weddings, and anniversary parties, among other items.

Biographical Note

John Wesley Blackledge (1863-1937), son of Dr. Thomas G. and Susan E. Blackledge, received many of the invitations included in this collection. Blackledge was born in Indiana. In 1930, he was living at the Seneca Hotel on East Chestnut Street, Chicago, Illinois. When he donated this collection in March, 1936, Blackledge was living at 1320 North State Street in Chicago. He is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Custodial History

This collection was received by Rare Books and Manuscripts as a donation from John W. Blackledge on 1936/03/14. Some of the materials were transferred from the Indiana State Library on 1932/10/22, and from the Archives on 1962/06/01.
