The collection consists of a note from Birch Bayh, Jr. to Mr. and Mrs. George Nelson of Valparaiso, Indiana, in appreciation of condolences expressed at the death of Birch Evans Bayh, Sr. The letter of Birch Bayh, Jr. is on letterhead stationary of the United States Senate. This letter accompanies an “In Memoriam” statement which quotes William Cullen Bryant’s poem “Thanatopsis”. An envelope, postmarked September 17, 1971, provides a date for the collection.

Biographical Note

Birch Evans Bayh, Sr. was born in 1893 in Quincy, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana State University in 1917 where, as a student, he originated the Blue and White Day activities. He was a teacher and basketball coach in Owen County and Clay City Schools. He was the first athletic director at Indiana State University and a physical education professor at the Terre Haute school for five years. He also co-authored one of the first physical education manuals for American schools.

Bayh served as director of physical education, athletics and safety for the Washington, D.C. schools until his retirement in 1966. He died on August 26, 1971, at the age of 77.
