Historical Note

Leonard Neuerburg’s brickyard was first located at the northwest corner of Rural and East Washington streets in Indianapolis, Indiana and started in the early 1880s. By 1884 the business moved to 4401 East 10th street (Irvington Station, Indianapolis). Leonard Neuerburg was president of an organization of brick manufactures. The business supplied brick to Brightwood, Irvington, and Indianapolis. Neuerburg’s son John L. started working in the brickyard at age ten, continuing until the brickyard closed. By 1910, the clay on the property was almost exhausted. Leonard Neuerburg died on October 31, 1910 and the business was closed shortly afterwards.
