Lincoln Memorial collection
Collection — Folder: S3120
Identifier: S3120
Scope and Contents
The collection contains a carbon copy of an 11-page typescript history and plan for the Indiana Lincoln Memorial, entitled, "A Resume on the Indiana Lincoln Memorial, Lincoln City, Indiana." It was written sometime after 1934 and reviews the purpose, plans, and the work completed in establishing a memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Governor Edward L. Jackson and planner Frederick Law Olmstead are both quoted on the subject of the intent of the memorial. The contributions of Richard Lieber and Thomas Hibben, particularly in having arrived at a symbolic suggestion of the original Lincoln cabin, are also reviewed.
The typescript reviews the acquisition of 1,300 acres surrounding the Lincoln cabin, the purchase and moving of part of Lincoln City, the acquisition of the other historic property (e.g. the Grigsby's farm, on which stood a school Lincoln attended), the moving of earth for the reshaping of the landscape, and the creation of walkways, parking lots, and recreational facilities. Measurements are given of major features. It closes by restating the intent of the architecture and emphasizing the need to begin constructing the memorial, noting the disposition of state funding and the desirability of federal funding.

Historical Note
"Within the boundaries of Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial lie the gravesite of Nancy Hanks Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln' mother. The impact of her life, and her death, did much to shape the character of the boy who grew up to become President. The desire to commemorate her life has done much to shape the development of the national memorial."
