"Impressions" by Mary E. Steele is a travelogue of her experiences living in Europe with her husband, T. C. Steele, while he studied art in Munich. Per the title page, "Impressions" was a paper read by Steele before the Portfolio Club on March 16, 1893 and was then published by the Portfolio Club. Of the edition published in May, 1893 there were 250 copies and the library's copy is numbered 173. The book includes illustrations by William Forsyth, T. C. Steele, Harry Williamson, J. O. Adams, and Bruce Rogers. Mary Steele describes Munich and other areas of Germany such as Cologne and the Rhine River, art galleries she visited, and social and cultural life in the country.

Biographical Note

Mary Elizabeth Lakin was born on February 22, 1850. She married Theodore Clement Steele at her family's farm near Rushville, Indiana. They lived in Indianapolis in the 1870s and had three children: Grant, Sherley, and Daisy. Mary E. Steele died of tuberculosis in Indianapolis on November 14, 1899.
