Curtis family history

 Collection — Folder: S3109
Identifier: S3109

Scope and Contents

The collection includes a typescript family history entitled "Curtis Family History." The history begins in the year 1763 with Lottie Relander's great-great grandfather, who lived in Virginia in the early 1770s, and concludes with the 1870 marriage of Mary Gregg, Lottie Relander's mother, to Charles Relander, an immigrant from Sweden living in Danville, Indiana. Prominent family names mentioned in the history are Curtis, Sanders, Kirkendall, Reed, Ross, King, Stapp, and Relander. The family which is featured in the history is the Curtis family, particularly the descendants of Peter Curtis, five brothers, all of whom served in the Civil War.

The first page of the history quotes a thumbnail condensation of the history of the descendants of Peter Curtis, taken from the Atlas of Hendricks Co., Indiana (Chicago: J.H. Beers and Co., 1878). On that first page is listed the Civil War record of each of the Curtis brothers. Page 5 includes copies of two Civil War letters, both written by Lockie (or Ambrose Curtis) to his mother, from Vicksburg and Camp Big Black in Mississippi.
