Scope and Contents
The collection includes a diary kept by Milton Chamberlin during a portion of his service in the 4th Ohio Cavalry, as well as photocopies of a history and roster of the regiment. The diary contains three parts: memoranda (March 2-17, 1862); company rosters (March-May 1862); and the diary itself (November 16, 1861-August 25, 1862), which can be reached by reversing the book.
Chamberlin recorded in his diary information from dispatches, newspapers and rumor, although he was careful to record the last as what he had "heard." Many of Chamberlins's observations are firsthand, such as his meeting General McCook and his staff. Places named are: Camp Dennison, Louisville, Camp Kennet, Fayette, Maysville, Clint Creek, Bacon Creek, Elk River, Athens, Winchester. Chamberlin spends the greatest amound of time at Huntsville, traveling away from and returning to Huntsville on repeated occasions. Passages of interest are: an extensive description of battle on road, in field, and at a ferry (entry of June 1, 1862); battle near Watkin's ferry (May 2, 1862); capture of the Memphis train with 182 soldiers, a total of 15 locomotives and 100 cars, and telegraph offices (April 11, 1862); the deivision's match to Murfreesboro (March 19, 1862); Mrs Straight's "ministering to the wants of the sick in the hospitals here" (June 7, 1862); Colonel J.B. Turchin being court-martialed for pillaging a town (July 14, 1862); listing of equipment used by Signal Corps (May 10, 1862); descriptions of stringing of telegraph lines (May 21, 1862); use of gunboats (June 4, 6, and 22, 1862).

Biographical Note
Milton C. Chamberlin was commissuined a Second Lieutenant in Company I of the 4th Ohio Calvary of Septemeber 7, 1861, on month after the regiment was organized at Camp Gurley under Colonel John Kennett. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on June 4, 1862. Milton Chamberlin's last promotion was to the rank of captain on February 1, 1863. Captain Chamberlin resigned from service on March 16, 1863.
