Biographical Note
Howard G. Osgood was born in Franklin County, Massachusetts in Sept. of 1833 and attended Amherst Academy for one year. He studied with a practicing physician, then finished his studies with physicians in Greenfield, MA and by completing a year at the Cincinnati (Ohio) Medical College. He relocated in June 1856 to Bloomington, Indiana, then to Gosport, IN where he worked as a physician for fifty years, initially (1856) in practice with Dr. Young. Dr. Young left and he was joined by Dr. Caleb L. Ritter, who later married his eldest daughter Anna.
He served in the Fifth Indiana Volunteer Calvary as Assistant Surgeon from Jan. 29, 1863 to May 25, 1864, when he resigned due to ill health.
Osgood married Harriet "Hattie" Lyons on Feb. 24, 1859 (who died in 1890) in Owen County. They had four daughters, Anna, Elizabeth Eunice [Unice], Lora, and Hattie, who did not survive infancy. He died in 1913 and is buried in the Gosport Cemetery.
