Biographical Note

Major Ward Bradford was born April 13, 1809 in Maine. When he was 84 years old, he wrote a memoir of his life and travels. In the 1830s, Bradford lived in Ligonier, Noble County, Indiana, building the first house there and constructing the first bridge over the Elkhart River in the city.

Later, Bradford traveled to and lived in Iowa, Missouri, Oregon and California. He traveled by wagon train and steamboat numerous times between the East and the West and describes these travels in his memoir, including a horrific steamboat explosion he witnessed in New Orleans, Louisiana on October 23, 1849.
