Scope and Contents
The collection includes family papers dating from 1815 to 1908 from various members of the Scoville, Northam, and Ferris families. Primary correspondents are Almira Gates, Marvin Smith, Amherst D. Scovell, and Lucy Scovell. Also included are genealogical papers listing births, deaths, and marriages of members of the Scovella nd Northam families, and wills and related documents from the Ferris family.

Biographical / Historical
Asa Northam was born in Colchester, Connecticut in 1766 and died November 6, 1855. Harriet Scovell was born January 1, 1788 in Colchester and married Asa Northam on April 20, 1817. They had a number of children: Polly, Asa (who died young), Asa, Harriet, Edward, Elisa, Anna, Almira, Alfred, Samuel, and twins who died at birth. Amherst D. Scovell, Harriet's brother, was born February 1, 1798, most likely in Connecticut and died July 31, 1837 in Indiana.
Nelson Ferris was the son of Leonard and Elizabeth Ryan Ferris. he was born November 8, 1817 in Cayuga County, New York. He moved to Mishawaka, Indiana in 1841. He was a miller and active in politics in St. Joseph County, serving as sheriff and also in the state legislature. He married Sally Weeks on January 1, 1841. Their children were Morton E., Elizabeth J., William Waverly and Rowena H.
