Scope and Contents
This collection contains William Schneider's correspondence, business documents, receipts, ledgers, and account books (1850 to 1903) for business he conducted in St. Wendel, Indiana. The collection also contains the Schneider and Naas store cash book, daybooks, and ledgers (1862-1872). The account books contain a variety of entries including newspaper subscriptions, purchases, shipments, and other business transactions. The daybooks contain the daily store transactions and the ledgers hold the individual accounts of customers.

Biographical Note
William Schneider was born in Saxony, Germany in 1824. He moved to America when he was eight years old, first settling with his family in Pennsylvania. Later he moved to German Township, Vanderburgh County, Indiana and then to the German community of St. Wendel, Posey County, Indiana. Schneider married Catherine Herbert (1830-1915) on August 5, 1851 and they had eight children. He was the first postmaster for St. Wendel (1852-1856) and he owned a general store, partnering with George Naas from 1862 to 1872. Schneider also became a successful farmer and land owner, leaving an estate worth an estimated $75,000 at his death on November 19, 1897.
