Scope and Contents

This collection contains a photocopied transcription of a Civil War Era diary maintained by John Cashner during his time with Company E of the 13th Indiana Infantry Regiment. The diary begins on November 3rd, 1861 and journal entries go up to May 29th, 1862. Generally, there is a brief entry for every single day detailing the salient events that happened on that day. Topics covered include winter encampments, picket duty, items that were purchased and/or retrieved and daily camp life among other topics.

James M. Cashner copied John Cashner's diary in 1963.

Biographical Note

John Cashner was born on July 30, 1841 to John and Susanna Cashner. He enlisted on June 19, 1861 to Company E, Indiana 13th Infantry Regiment in Indianapolis, Indiana during the U.S. Civil War and he mustered out on December 12, 1862. While with the 13th Indiana, Cashner saw some fighting but was not engaged in any major battles. His unit fought predominantly in either the Shenandoah Valley or in the east of Virginia.

James M. Cashner was born on July 23, 1923 to Charles E. and Lillie Mae (Gordon) Cashner. He was John Cashner's great nephew.
