Biographical Note

Presley "Press" James O'Bannon was born on March 14, 1836 to Elias and Rebecca (Hunt) O'Bannon (1799-1855) in Indiana. The family lived in Ohio Township, Crawford County, Indiana in 1850. He had a younger brother named Thomas E. (1840-1860) and two older sisters named Annie (1831-1880) and Mary J. (1833-1858). O'Bannon eventually became a lawyer and lived in Crawford County, Indiana. O'Bannon joined Company C, 17th Indiana Regiment as a corporal on June 12, 1861. He had been a justice of the peace for Ohio Township, presumably in Crawford County, but resigned just after his enlistment. He rose through the ranks quickly, promoted to sergeant on January 11, 1862; 2nd lieutenant on September 30, 1862; 1st lieutenant on July 13, 1863; and captain on April 26, 1864. O'Bannon mustered out at Macon, Georgia on August 8, 1865. He married Helena S. Bulla on August 5, 1866 in LaPorte County, Indiana and they had two sons, John Weldon (1867-1944) and Walter E. (1869-1897). In 1880, Helena and her sons were living with her parents in South Bend, Indiana.

According to U.S. pension records, Press J. O'Bannon adopted the alias of Thomas Clarence Brown and lived in Missouri when the first claim was filed in 1893. As Brown, he was living in Abilene, Kansas in 1880, after marrying Elizabeth McGee (1843-1881). The couple had a daughter, Susan, and a son, Rolla (1876-1966). Elizabeth Brown died on March 6, 1881 and was buried in Brown Memorial Cemetery in Abilene. Thomas Brown then married Malinda Ardelia Farthing (1859-1929) on December 9, 1882 in Sedalia, Missouri. Brown made a living as a carpenter and lived in Appleton, Missouri by 1900. The Browns had several children, including Oliver (1883-1934), Harry, Lena Irene, Benjamin Harrison (1888-1965), Fred (1890-1954), Mae F., Robert Lincoln (1893-), and Mark Hanna. Thomas C. Brown died on July 14, 1915 and was buried in Appleton City Cemetery, Appleton, Missouri.
