Henry Fludder letter

 Collection — Folder: S3038
Identifier: S3038

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of one Civil War letter written by Henry Fludder to his brother, George, on Aug. 10, 1864. In the letter, Henry Fludder traces his hospitalization and recounts the course of his illness, from bronchitis to “Sun pain” over his right eye. He expresses his desire to know of the health of friends and relatives; and he relates what news he has heard, including word of the death of his mother.

Henry Fludder never names his regiment in the letter, but he does provide the names of servicemen admitted to the General Field Hospital at Marietta, Georgia: “B.F. James [,?] Reubens [,?] Elijah P. James and David Rowland.” He also names acquaintances outside of the service, i.e., Edward Rankin and Mary Berst.

From that first hospitalization, he was sent to a hospital in Louisville and then to the hospital in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Henry Fludder had a brother named George and a daughter named Maria. From his own statement in a letter, he had a son, who also was in service during the Civil War.
