Historical Note
After defeating the French colonial government in Vietnam in 1954, Northern Vietnam wished to unite the entire country under one communist government whereas Southern Vietnam aligned more with the West. United States military involvement in Vietnam began on a large scale in 1961 as a manifestation of the ongoing Cold War with the Soviet Union to prevent the expanse of communism. By 1969, more than 500,000 U.S. soldiers were stationed in Vietnam and the conflict lasted until 1973 when U.S. forces were withdrawn from the country.
