Historical Note
The National Road, the country's first interstate highway, ran from Cumberland, Maryland, to Vandalia, Illinois. The first section as far as Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia), was the Cumberland Road which opened in 1818. Construction of the road ceased in 1839, leaving much of the route unfinished in Indiana and Illinois, before its construction was transferred to the states. The National Road ran east-west through Richmond, Indianapolis, and Terre Haute, Indiana roughly along the modern U.S. 40, although it originally aligned with East and West Washington streets, while the modern U.S. 40 is routed along I-465 in Indianapolis.
