Scope and Contents

This collection includes a photocopy of a typed transcript of the diary kept by John M. Tomey during his military service from January 1, 1864 through September 15, 1864, during the U.S. Civil War. Also included are photocopies of a map of the 27th Regiment's travels and a typescript poem, "Flags of the Twenty-Seventh" by E. R. Brown.

Biographical Note

John Michael Tomey IV was born in Daviess County, Indiana on January 8, 1834 to John Jacob Tomey III and Sally Mathewson. He married Agnes A. Allen in Daviess County on September 28, 1854 and the couple had ten children: Dan, Martha Etta, Jacob Elihu, William Rufus, Sarah Caroline, John Wilson IV, Eliza J., Charles Milburn, Emily A., and Margaret E. A cooper and farmer by trade, Tomey joined the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War, enlisting into Company G as a private of the 27th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He mustered in on August 19, 1861, and saw fighting at the first Battle of Winchester, Fort Royal, Cedar Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the New York Draft Riots, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, and the Siege of Atlanta before mustering out as a corporal, with the rest of his unit on September 13, 1864. Tomey returned to Daviess County and farming, outliving his first wife who passed away in 1894, and remarrying in 1896 to Nancy J. Wininger. Tomey died on January 10, 1903 in Daviess County, Indiana and is buried in the Talbot Chapel Cemetery there.
