This letter is from Major General Winfield Scott Hancock at the 1st Corps Headquarters outside Washington D.C to the Adjutant General of Indiana on December 10, 1864. The letter concerns the enclosure of orders and circulars organizing the 1st Corps and asks the Adjutant General to ask the Secretary of War to appoint officers from Indiana.

Biographical / Historical

Winfield Scott Hancock was a U.S. Army officer and politician. He served as a Union general in the Civil War and was one of its most notable commanders. He also ran as Democratic nominee for President in 1880. His most memorable battle in the Civil War was Gettysburg; he was badly wounded, but returned to service ten months later. Towards the end of the war he commanded the First Veterans Corps in Washington D.C. He died in 1886.
