Biographical Note
Alanson William Snyder was born on September 14, 1839, in Clyde, Wayne County, New York to William H. and Electa Rockwood (Bothwell) Snyder. The family moved to Indiana by 1850 and Snyder grew up in Crown Point and Saint John, Indiana. He married Eleanor Patrick on May 2, 1861, in Crown Point, shortly before he joined the Union Army. Snyder mustered into the 99th Indiana Infantry Regiment and served from 1861 to 1865, eventually reaching the rank of corporal before the end of the war. After the war, Snyder moved his family to Waseca, Minnesota, where he worked as a railroad engineer for passenger trains and was a supporter of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. Snyder died on October 13, 1919, in Waseca and is buried in Woodville Cemetery there.
