Biographical Note
James S. Fogle was born on January 22, 1839 to Thomas C. and Christina L. (Holland) Fogle in Bartholomew County, Indiana. He lived in Hartsville, Bartholomew County when the U.S. Civil War began. He mustered into service with the 11th Indiana Infantry Regiment in 1861 as a private with F Company. He fought with the 11th for years until he was shot and killed at the Battle of Champion Hills on May 16, 1863. He is buried in Champion Hill Burial Ground in Mississippi.
