Historical Note

The 7th Indiana Infantry Regiment first mustered in at Indianapolis, Indiana, in April 1861 and was sent to West Virginia, participating in one of the first land battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Philippi. The 7th Indiana was attached to Brigadier General Thomas A. Morris’ Indiana Brigade and was attached to Major General George B. McClellan’s Army of West Virginia. The unit saw fighting in the Rich Mountain Campaign, Greenbrier, Laurel Hill, Belington, the Battle of Corrick’s Ford, and the pursuit of Garnett’s forces. During these three months the 7th only suffered one man killed in battle while another two who perished of disease. The regiment then mustered out in August and was re-formed in the fall of 1861.

The 7th Indiana saw action in the battles of Port Republic, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and the Siege of Petersburg. The 7th Indiana lost eight officers and 108 enlisted men in battle or of their wounds, and another two officers and 111 enlisted men died of disease, for a total of 229 fatalities. The 7th Indiana Infantry Regiment mustered out on September 20, 1864, and any men who still had unexpired service were transferred to the 19th Indiana Infantry Regiment.
