Scope and Contents

This collection includes the January 10, 1866 discharge paper of James Nixon from Company M, 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery following the end of the Civil War. On the back of the document a note was added that states, "Given to F.G. McCormack by: Mrs. Sarah J. Bechner who received it from James S. Nixon at Arlington, IND. June - 1867, to be kept for him, but no trace of him has been found since that time. 9-21-1921." The collection also has an envelope with James Nixon, H.H.(?) Daugherty, and Shelbyville written on it.

Biographical Note

James Nixon was born around 1840 in Syracuse, New York. He was a blacksmith by trade and was living in Shelbyville, Indiana when he enlisted with the Company M, 1st Regiment, Indiana Heavy Artillery for three years service on October 13, 1863. He was an artificer and served until he was mustered out on January 10, 1866 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
