Historical Note
The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization of veterans who served in the Civil War between April 12, 1861 and April 9, 1865, and were honorably discharged veterans of the Union Army, Navy, Marine Corps or the Revenue Cutter Service. It was founded by Dr. Benjamin F. Stephenson in Decatur, Illinois, on April 6, 1866, who organized community level "Posts", and by 1890, totaled 409,489 veterans nationally.
Indiana Civil War Governor Oliver P. Morton helped to organize the GAR posts throughout Indiana, and notably, the first in Crawfordsville, Indiana, known as Post No. 1 of Montgomery County. The final Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic was held in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1949 and the last member, Albert Woolson died in 1956 at the age of 109 years.
