Biographical Note

Franz "Frank" Xavier Zehringer was born to Landoline (1815-1873) and Karolina "Caroline" (Weissenberger) Zehringer (1827-1895) in Kenzingen, Baden, Germany on November 19, 1851. His family immigrated to the United States in 1854 and were living in Indianapolis, Indiana by 1860. He had two younger siblings, Josephine "Josie" (1857-1923) and John, who were born in Indiana. Zehringer was a cabinetmaker like his father and also worked for a sewing machine company. He married Johannah "Hanna" Reichert (1855-1901) on April 14, 1875 in Indianapolis and they had several children, only four of whom survived to adulthood: Bertha May (1880-1941), Howard Arthur (1882-1954), Alfred W. (1884-1897), Clarence Robert (1887-1941), and Carl Victor (1892-1914). The couple likely had two children before Bertha--J. Harry (1876-1884) and Charles F. (1878-1884)--who died as children and were buried in the Zehringer family plot. The Zehringers may have belonged to the Third German Methodist Episcopal Church, located at the corner of Church and Morris streets.

In 1876, Frank Zehringer worked as a cabinetmaker for Hall Bros., but by 1880, he and his partner Thomas Vance had a business located at 26 and 48 Massachusetts Avenue, manufacturing lounges and mattresses. By 1884, he had gone into a new business, selling picture frames and moldings, with Frank Scheirich at 29 Massachusetts Avenue. The enterprise became his own by 1887 and he added a new partner, William Ward by 1889. Frank Zehringer died on December 19, 1894 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis along with most of his family.
