Biographical Note
John M. Gray was born in 1835 in Indiana to James Gray (sometimes Grey) and Sarah Morrow. He lived in Noblesville, Indiana his entire life and became a general physician, surgeon, and druggist for the town. During the U.S. Civil War, he closed his practice and joined the 39th Indiana Infantry Regiment as an assistant surgeon. The 39th Indiana became the 8th Indiana Calvary while Gray was serving. He would later be commissioned into a full surgeon and serve until the end of the war, mustering out with the rest of the 8th Cavalry. Gray was with his unit for 43 months, serving the wounded from the battles of Shiloh, Stones River, Chickamauga, Brown’s Mill, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, the Siege of Corinth, the Tullahoma and Chattanooga campaigns, and Sherman’s March to the Sea. He returned home and married Emily Susan Evans on October 17, 1865 in Hamilton County, Indiana. The couple had three children: Victoria Harriet, James J., and Jeanette “Jeanie” Evans. Gray reopened his physician’s office in Noblesville after the war and served his community in such capacity until he passed away on August 29, 1899. He was buried in Crownland Cemetery in Noblesville, Indiana.
