Scope and Contents

The collection consists of an 1849 issue of the American Temperance Recorder, “a Monthly Journal for the diffusion of Temperance Knowledge,” being a compilation of essays on living without the consumption of alcoholic beverages. The essays approach the topic of temperance from a religious orientation. Essays in this collection include a sermon titled “Life in Its Origin, Forms and Issues,” by Rev. George Bush, concerning the spiritual nature of life; an essay entitled “The Church in the House,” by Rev. James Hamilton concerning making the home a place of religious practice; a tract excerpted from the National Temperance Offering titled “Adulterations of Liquors,” by E.C. Delavan, Esq.; and “Reflections on the Foregoing Statements,” by the Publishers.

Historical Note

American Temperance Recorder was a monthly publication of Brognard and Company, which was also the publisher of The New York Organ, described as a “Weekly Temperance and Family Journal.” Both were publications of the National Temperance Society.
