Biographical / Historical
Lewis Emery Bailie was born on January 6, 1866 in Effingham County, Illinois to Gilbert and Catharine Bailie. He started working as a railroad depot agent-telegrapher for the Vandalia Railroad around 1882 when he was 16 years old and worked at several railroad stations before moving to Terre Haute, Indiana. There he was promoted to assistant to the chief train dispatcher and one of his new duties was to teach the new telegraph operators "how to railroad." In April 1905, he open the National School of Telegraphy in Greencastle, Indiana. Seeveral students graduated from the school's 3 month program before Bailie was recalled to Terre Haute in October and without his leadership, the school closed at the end of November. Bailie continued to work for the railroad until his retirement in 1930 and passed away on May 7, 1941.
