Historical Note

The Gascho family of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, decided to move to Indiana in 1847 following a scouting trip completed by the head of the family the year prior. Jonathan Gascho, Jr. and his family--a wife, two daughters, and seven sons--travelled by covered wagon through the Alleghenies, sliding down four miles on the far slope, across the marshes and “endless forests” of Ohio, fording rivers and fighting measles, and finally to end the journey east of Noblesville, Indiana, where the family made their home.
