Biographical Note

Frederick Wildermuth Rigley was born on July 1, 1914, in Owosso, Michigan, but spend most of his life in Nashville, Indiana. He began his art career as a teenager and spent his career mostly painting with oils, watercolors, and acrylics, focusing on landscapes and seascapes. Rigley studied at the Art Students’ League in New York annd met his wife, Jeanette Green, before moving to Florida where Rigley majored in sculpture at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota. He learned under instructors such as Floyd Hopper, George Bridgman, Emile A. Gruppé, Hilton Leech, Adrian Pillars, Enrique Elferez, and John F. Carlson.

After starting out on the East Coast as the president of the North Shore Art Association in 1950, he moved his family to Brown County, Indiana for its beautiful landscapes and thriving art scene. Rigley liked to paint “en plein air” and taught landscape painting with the Indianapolis Art League for 25 years along with private classes and workshops. He won many awards during the course of his artistic career and his works are held in collections of many organizations, such as Outdoor Indiana, General Motors, the Eastern Shore Art Association, Fairhope, Indiana National Bank, Indiana University, the University of Delaware, and Indianapolis Public Schools. Rigley and his wife opened Rigley Studios, an art supply store and framing business on Van Buren Street in Nashville, Indiana and remained a steadfast member of the art community there until his passing on March 22, 2009.
